Is Tweed the New Gentleman’s Choice for British Weddings?

Whatever past preconceptions you may have of Tweed, whether you think it’s geeky, nerdy, hippy, or reserved for the countryside elite, there is a huge resurgence in this popular and trendy fabric. Tweed is the gentleman’s fabric of choice for a distinguished suit at a wedding to a casual jacket and trousers in everyday life. Tweed is one of our favourite versatile materials that can be dressed up or dressed down to suit your mood and the occasion.
It’s perfectly acceptable to wear a Tweed suit to the cricket, or the races, a day-trip fishing, or to a wedding. In fact, the texture and chic design of a Tweed suit make it a comfortable suit for all occasions whether in the spring, summer, autumn or winter.
Tweed suits are all about making a statement. Tweed itself is big part of British culture and brings up images of the quintessential English gentleman, cool, calm and professional. This rough, woollen fabric is extremely flexible and comfortable to wear. It is also hard wearing and water resistant, suitable for countryside pursuits such as hunting, shooting, fishing or walking in our many different British weathers.
It’s interesting to see how Tweed suits have been modernised and they have become a popular choice for men to wear to formal occasions, especially weddings, where the distinctive style can set you apart from everyone else. There’s no debate. Tweed suits are 100% acceptable to wear in Church weddings and registry office weddings, at the ceremony and the reception.
If you are new to wearing Tweed, you may wish to start slowly, perhaps with a Tweed jacket and casual trousers. Or, to test the water, try wearing a Tweed tie or Tweed cravat with your usual suit and build up to introducing Tweed into your wardrobe. A Tweed jacket and plain coloured trousers can be the perfect synergy of smart-casual suitable to wear in the office and then for an after-work drink with friends.
As well as being versatile and comfortable, Tweed also comes in many colours and designs. If you have a preference for dark coloured suits, there will be a shade of Tweed to suit your style. Or if you want to wear a light coloured Tweed suit, perhaps matched with a light coloured shirt and tie, you will also find what you’re looking for.
Depending on the occasion, you may wish to add a “Peaky Blinders” Tweed peaked cap to complete your look, to protect your head from the sun, wind or rain. A Tweed peaked cap is also a stylish way to shield your eyes in the rain and looks fabulous when driving in the country lanes in your sporty cabriolet. Ideally, your Tweed peaked cap should match the colours in your Tweed suit and add the finishing touch to your contemporary streetwise look.
When choosing your Tweed suit, there are three key parts, the blazer or jacket, the waistcoat and the trousers. This is your three-piece Tweed suit that you can wear with a white or coloured shirt and a tie or cravat. If you find a waistcoat too formal or too constricting, don’t wear it. Save it in your wardrobe for formal occasions or for when you remove your jacket and still need to look smart.
Remember, your waistcoat doesn’t need to exactly match the colours in your jacket and trousers. If you have chosen a check or herringbone design for your jacket or blazer, you can choose a solid, plain colour for your waistcoat, or vice-versa.
The muted colours of browns and greens, also known as “earth shades”, once associated primarily with hunting and fishing are great choices for your outdoor pursuits. The countryside colours transfer seamlessly into weddings and formal occasions where the browns and greens epitomise the essence of the good, rustic, honest country life many of us dream of.
But with the huge expansion of the Tweed industry, inevitably the range of colours has exploded with Tweed available in any colour imaginable. Pastel Tweed is very on trend right now. Choosing a duck-egg blue, soft mint, ivory or cream as the base colour for your Tweed suit gives you many choices to weave in different colours with your accessories, or to match your partner’s outfit at a party or wedding.
Tweed is an elegant choice as the material is fitted to your body shape and the natural fibres are flexible to keep up with your busy lifestyle. Tweed has a clever texture that’s breathable in the summer and the finely woven strands act as insulation to keep you warm in the winter.
A practical, highly sophisticated material, Tweed has a strong, suave image that’s hard to beat, especially if you want to look fabulous at your best friend’s wedding.

When you go to a tailor, it’s much easier for them to reduce the size of things than it is to increase the size. Whether that means making your trousers shorter or the waist tighter, you should opt for things that are a little too big rather than too small when you’re buying off the rack.

Back in the day, there was really only one type of business attire: men wore suits, women wore dresses, and varying from that was pretty much unacceptable. Nowadays, some offices are perfectly fine with you showing up in a t-shirt and jeans and there are plenty of  hoodie-wearing CEOs. On the flip side, you probably won’t have an appointment with your lawyer or banker where they’re hanging out in jeans and a Hawaiian shirt.

People know that they’ll be judged based on their appearance and whether or not that’s a good thing is a philosophical discussion for another time. What matters is that the pressure is real. This pressure can cause people to spend thousands of dollars on plastic surgery, Botox , and other cosmetic procedures, when in most cases, all that’s needed is some fashion advice and new clothes.

When worn correctly, the right tie can bring a suit together and create a pleasing overall impression. Ties will draw the eye to the centre of your figure, focussing interest on your persona and allowing the eye to wander naturally to catch all the small design points and flattering aspects of your outfit. It concentrates your visual impact and immediately makes you look professional and reputable. Having said this, in recent years ties are been misappropriated as stuffy and potentially overbearing, and many situations have trended towards the casual so you might need to consider whether a tie is the right call.
